Early Irish Immigrants to Essex County

Presenter: Dr. Laura Smith, from the Canada Ireland Foundation

Dr. Laura J. Smith is a historian of the Irish in early Canada. She holds a PhD in history from the University of Toronto. Her dissertation looked at the religious and political lives of Irish Catholic migrants and settlers in Upper Canada (before 1840). She has published in various peer-reviewed academic journals and edited collections, on Irish Catholic migration and political activism in Upper Canada, and more recently, on the reception and management of Irish Famine migrants to Ontario in the 1840s. She is the Vice-President of the Canadian Catholic Historical Association and the co-editor of Borealia, a blog about early Canadian history. She is a historical consultant for the Canada Ireland Foundation where she was the historian for the recently-opened Grasett Park and is now leading the Tracing the Irish Famine Generation in Ontario project.
